"Dragon Inn" to Return to the Silver Screen

With box office earnings of 550 Million RMB, director Tsui Hark's IMAX 3D blockbuster "Flying Swords of the Dragon Gate" set a new record for Chinese Kung Fu movies. Hot on the heels of this exciting news, producer Wu Siyuan announced that a revised edition of Tsui Hark's classic movie "Dragon Inn" (1992) will hit mainland's screens on February 24, mtime.com reports.

Supervised by Tsui Hark and directed by Raymond Lee, "Dragon Inn" featured an all-star cast including Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung, Brigitte Lin and Donnie Yen. At the time, the movie was regarded as a prime example of the new genre of Hong Kong Kung Fu movies. The film is still one of the most talked-about Kung Fu movies among die-hard fans.

Wu revealed that the original story line will remain unaltered but the picture and sound quality will be upgraded with the help of the latest technology.

Zhang Yimou's war epic fails to win over Academy voters

Chinese director Zhang Yimou's latest war epic "The Flowers of War" failed to advance into the first round of contention for the best foreign language film award at the 84th Academy Awards, as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences short-listed nine movies for the next round of voting.

The film, one of China's highest grossing film which stars Academy Award best supporting actor Christian Bale in the role of a Westerner who attempts to lead a group of Chinese women seeking refuge in a church to safety during Japan's rape of Nanjing in 1937, was not included in a list of nine films, which features Iranian Golden Globe winner "A Separation"; "Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale," a war flick by Wei Te-sheng from Taiwan, China; Polish Holocaust drama "In Darkness"; "Bullhead" (Belgium); "Monsieur Lazhar" (Canada); "Superclasico" (Denmark); "Pina" ( Germany); "Footnote" (Israel); and "Omar Killed Me" (Morocco).

Zhang Yimou also walked away empty-handed from the 69th annual Golden Globes held in Hollywood, Los Angeles Sunday evening as Asghar Farhadi's drama "The Separation" was crowned with the best foreign language film trophy.

A total of 63 films had been deemed qualified for the contention.

Special committees based in Los Angeles and New York will pick up five nominees this weekend. The Academy will announce the nominees on Jan. 24 and hold the award ceremony at the Kodak Theatre on Feb. 26.

Film directors Sun Jianjun and Robert Francis Brown were in Dubai on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 to shoot the action and fashion movie "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains".

As the first Chinese film to be predominantly produced outside China, the 100-million-yuan (US$15.8 million) movie has A-list stars Andy Lau, Lin Chi-ling and Zhang Jingchu in its main roles, and will be shot in six cities: Dubai, Hangzhou, Fuyang, Taipei, Tokyo and Milan.

The film's key scenes will be filmed at the Atlantis Hotel, The Palm and other Dubai landmarks including the seven-star hotel Burj Al Arab and the world's tallest tower Burj Khalifa.

Asked if he wants to compete with "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol", co-produced by its main actor Tom Cruise, Sun replied that "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains" will be even more breath-taking.

More about Chinese Actress Yu Nan

Born in 1978, Yu Nan studied acting at the Beijing Film Academy, China's top educational institution for film talent.

Her acting talent was discovered by director Wang Quan'an who cast her in the lead role of the 1999 film "Lunar Eclipse". Yu later worked with Wang Quan'an in several more films, the best-known one being "Tuya's Marriage", which garnered the top prize at the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival.

Yu's fluency in English also landed her a role in Wachowski brothers' 2008 live-action film "Speed Racer". She also speaks French.

The actress was a jury member for the main competition of the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival.

3D 'Monkey King' makes debut in China

The 3D animation, " Uproar in Heaven," a landmark work of China's animation film history, starring iconic Monkey King, made its debut on the big screens around the country Wednesday.

The newly-released 3D version of "Uproar in Heaven" is a collaboration by the Shanghai Film Group (SFG) and Technicolor Group, an internationally renowned moviemaking company famous for its postproduction services for films.

Based on one of the four classic Chinese novels -- "Journey to the West" written by Wu Cheng'en in the 1590s during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), "Uproar in Heaven" was first filmed in 1964.

The movie "Uproar in Heaven" features the part of the novel when Monkey King caused trouble in heaven and defeated an army of 100,000 celestial soldiers, led by the Four Heavenly Kings. Monkey King was subdued by Buddha and later became a protector of a Buddhist monk Xuan Zang during his pilgrimage to India during the Tang dynasty (618-907).

The award-winning animation features various Chinese elements and remains one of the favorite animations of many people at home and abroad.

As a recreation of the classic animation, the 3D version of "Uproar in Heaven" aims to take advantage of high-tech to make the original story more vivid and dynamic, said Su Da, the Chinese director of the 3D film.

Yan Dingxian, the 75-year-old painter of the original animation "Uproar in Heaven," has also participated in the recreation of the 3D version.

"The 3D version has lifelike visual and sound effects," said Yan.

China's film market demands high-quality technology support so that Technicolor Group, the special effects producer of a series of international blockbusters such as "Avatar," "2012" and "Harry Potter," cherishes this chance to cooperate with China, said Frederic Rose, CEO of Technicolor.

The 3D version film will provide movie-goers with a visual feast while some may recall the beautiful memories of their childhood, said Ren Zhonglun, producer of the film.

Western classic music has been added into the film soundtrack catering to the international market, compared to the traditional version featuring the music of Chinese opera.

A group of popular actors, singers and directors including Feng Xiaogang, Yao Chen, and Chen Daoming have been invited to dub for the film.

Avril Lavigne to rock Beijing on Valentine's Day

Canadian rock singer Avril Lavigne is set to perform in Beijing on Valentine's Day as part of her new round "Black Star" tour.

The Feb. 14 show will be held in the MasterCard Centre, formally known as the Wukesong Arena.

The tour will first stop in Guangzhou on Feb. 11 in Guangzhou Gymnasium.

Lavigne will perform her new songs from the album "Goodbye Lullaby," according to tour promoters. With consideration for young fans, ticket prices will be set from 280 yuan to 880 yuan (US$44 to 139).

The popular rock singer last appeared in the Chinese capital during last year's China Music Valley International Festival, held in Beijing's Pinggu District from April 30 to May 1, 2011.

With support from the local government, the festival featured a powerful line-up including Lavigne, U.S. actress-singer Juliette Lewis, rock band Hot Hot Heat and English electro-pop singer, Little Boots.
